Final Fantasy Resonance gets a new trailer, gameplay details, and more

The latest look at Final Fantasy Resonance leans heavily into old-school nostalgia, adapting the visual and mechanical language of classic RPGs into Square Enix's modern signature style.

The Pitch: Reimagining a Story

Final Fantasy Resonance is an expanded, complete reimagining of the mobile RPG Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. However, this console and PC release completely strips away the original gacha mechanics, microtransactions, and energy systems, reshaping it into a traditional, standalone single-player RPG experience.

The plot follows Rain, a young airship squadron commander, alongside his companion Lasswell and a mysterious girl named Fina, as they journey to protect the world's remaining crystals from a destructive armored foe known as Veritas of the Dark.

Visual Direction

This marks the official debut of a Final Fantasy title built entirely in the HD-2D art style, popularized by games like Octopath Traveler. Square Enix is calling the visual presentation "cinematic pixel art," which blends classic 2D sprite designs with 3D models, dynamic camera work, and heavily stylized environments.

Gameplay Mechanics

The trailer and developer updates confirmed several core features regarding combat and exploration:

  • Strategic Turn-Based Battles: Moving away from the action-heavy focus of recent mainline titles, Resonance utilizes a classic turn-based layout. Players can exploit enemy elemental and physical weaknesses to Stagger them, breaking their defenses to earn extra turns.

  • Resonance Attacks: When an entire enemy team is staggered, players can unleash high-damage, cinematic combination attacks called Resonance.

  • The "Vision" System: Because the story stems from Brave Exvius, players can summon "Visions"—crystallized echoes of legendary heroes from across Final Fantasy history (including Cecil, Bartz, Squall, Zidane, Tidus, and Cloud). These characters can be equipped to party members to grant unique active skills and magic options in battle.

  • Classic Progression & Exploration: The game includes a full job system for party customization, recruitable Espers (like Ifrit, Titan, and Shiva) that fight alongside the party for three turns before executing an ultimate move, an overworld map navigated via Chocobos and airships, and side activities including a combat Colosseum and classic mini-games.
